Blue Hen track teams compete in Penn Relays

1:42 p.m., May 2, 2005--The University of Delaware track and field teams competed in six events at the 111th annual Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania's historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

The UD women’s team competed in the 4x100-meter relay, the 4x200-meter relay and the pole vault on Thursday. The UD men’s team competed in the 4x100-meter relay, 4x200-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay on Friday.

For the UD men, the 4x400 team of Charlie Williams, Chris Dixon, Phil Smiley and Dave Sherman finished second overall in the Frank Wetzler Pennsylvania Relay with a season-best time of 3:18.60. St. Joseph's University won the race in 3:15.63.

Also for the UD men, the 4x100 team of Pat Henry, Jason Bradley, Scott Vari and Charlie Williams ran to a time of 43.07 to finish sixth in its heat and the 4x200 team of Henry, Chris Dixon, Bradley and Williams ran to a time of 1:29.00 to finish eighth.

The UD women's 4x100 team of Domonique Carter, Kristen Frustillo, Rayna Horsey and Asha Quant finished seventh in its heat with a time of 49.35. In the 4x200, the UD team of Carter, Frustillo, Horsey and Quant posted the third fastest time in school history with a clocking of 1:45.72 to finished eight in its heat.

Individually for the UD women, senior Casey Bennett finished eighth in the pole vault with a leap of 11 feet, 11-3/4 inches. Bennett has qualified for the NCAA regionals after capturing the Colonial Athletic Association title last week at George Mason University.

UD also competed at the Lions Invitational on Saturday on the campus of the College of New Jersey in Ewing. Brad Dodson won both the 800- and the 1500-meter runs, Matt Guida won the pole vault and Mike Yost won the hammer throw.

Dodson won the 800 meters in 1:54:18 and the 1500 in 3:54:23, while Guida won the pole vault with a leap of 14 feet, 9 inches, and Yost won the hammer with a throw of 166 feet, 7 inches. Yost also finished fourth in the discus.

P.J. Meany finished second in the 5000-meter run and Kyle Casella finished second in the hammer throw. Will Jurkowski finished sixth in the 800 meters, Tony DiUlio sixth in the discus, Hao Guan sixth in the hammer throw, Matt Harrell seventh in the 5000 meters, Casella seventh in the shot put and Eric Lehrer seventh in the hammer throw.

For the UD women, Brittany Wright finished second in the 100-meter dash and fifth in the 200-meter dash, Rachel Young finished second in the shot put, third in the discus and sixth in the hammer throw, Lisa Weeks finished second in the discus, and Julie Hischman finished second in the javelin. Domonique Carter finished third in the long jump, Stephanie Crook fourth in the hammer throw and Rayna Horsey fifth in the 100 meters.

Also, Asha Quant finished sixth in the 200 meters and the long jump, Reagan Hastings sixth in the pole vault, Amy Miller and Kaitlin McGowan tied for seventh in the pole vault and Weeks ninth in the hammer throw.

The UD track and field teams will return to action when they host the second Delaware Invitational on Saturday, May 7.
