Yost, Bennett win CAA track and field titles

2:38 p.m., April 25, 2005--The University of Delaware track and field teams can boast of two individual champions in the Colonial Athletic Association championship meet completed Saturday at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., with Mike Yost winning the men’s discus and Casey Bennett the women’s pole vault.

As individual event champions, Bennett and Yost will compete in the NCAA regional meet to be held May 27-28 at Manhattan College.

Overall, the Fightin’ Blue Hens men’s team finished in fifth place and the women’s team in sixth place. The University of North Carolina Wilmington won the CAA men’s championship and the College of William and Mary won the women’s championship.

Yost won the discus with a throw of 151 feet, 7 inches and finished second in the hammer throw with a personal best of 177 feet, 11 inches.

Also for the UD men’s team, Jason Bradley finished second in the 110-meter hurdles and Chris Dixon finished second in the 400-meter hurdles. The Delaware 4x400 meter relay team of Charlie Williams, Dixon, Phil Smiley and Dave Sherman finished third.

Matt Guida finished fourth in the pole vault, Dixon was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles and Smiley was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles. The UD 4x100 meter relay team of Pat Henry, Bradley, Scott Vari and Williams also finished fourth.

Adam Cianfichi finished fifth in the javelin, P.J. Meany sixth in the 5,000 meters, Eric Lehrer seventh in the javelin, Kyle Casella seventh in both the hammer and shot put, Matt Harrell seventh in the 5000-meter run and Williams seventh in the 400-meter dash.

Bennett won the pole vault title with a leap of 11 feet, 11-3/4 inches. Rachel Young was third in the hammer and Kate Klim was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The 4x100 meter relay team of Brittany Wright, Rayna Horsey, Kristen Frustillo and Domonique Carter finished fourth, while Julie Hischman finished sixth in the javelin and Wright sixth in the 100-meter dash.

Kaitlin McGowan finished seventh in the pole vault, Lisa Weeks seventh in the shot put and the 4x400 meter relay team of Horsey, Carter, Megan Oberst and Wright seventh. Stephanie Cronk finished eighth in the hammer, Regan Hastings eighth in the pole vault, Carter eighth in the 400-meter dash and Weeks eighth in the discus.
