9:09 a.m., May 23, 2005--The fifth seeded University of Delaware baseball team will open Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament action against George Mason University at noon, Wednesday, May 25, at Brooks Field on the campus of the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens enter the tournament with a record of 26-29 overall and 13-11 in the conference after winning two of three games over Virginia Commonwealth University to close the regular season. The Hens lost 4-3 on Thursday, then came back to win 7-3 on Friday and 8-7 on Saturday.

The Hens have a strong offense paced by four players with batting averages over .300. They are Bryan Hagerich (.311), Adam Tsakonas (.306), Dan Richardson (.304) and Todd Davison (.303).

Brandon Menchaca leads the team with eight home runs, followed by Hagerich and Tsakonas with seven each. Hagerich and Davison lead the team with 38 runs batted in.

UD’s top pitchers are Scott Rambo, who has 13 starts and a record of 6-4, and Mike McGuire, who has 11 starts and a record of 5-4.

George Mason is the tournament’s second seed, with a record of 33-17 overall and 15-9 in the CAA. The Patriots swept UD in a series earlier in May, winning 9-0, 3-1 and 7-4.

If the UD wins the tournament opener, it will face the winner of the game between Virginia Commonwealth and Towson University at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 26.

If the UD loses the opener, it will face the loser of the game between top seeded UNC Wilmington and Hofstra University in an elimination game to be played at noon, Thursday, May 26.

Cost of a tournament pass, which provides admission to all games, is $20 for adults and $12 for young people. Single-day tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for young people. Both can be purchased at the gate.

The CAA champion will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. UNC Wilmington is the defending champion.
