Delaware baseball team falls to George Mason

6:09 p.m., May 25, 2005--The University of Delaware baseball team opened Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament play with a 9-5 loss to George Mason University on Tuesday afternoon at Brooks Field on the campus of the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

George Mason had swept the Fightin’ Blue Hens in a three-game series earlier this month and on Tuesday opened a 1-0 lead in the first inning when right fielder Matt York scored on a wild pitch by UD freshman starter Mike McGuire.

The Hens struck back in the fourth inning when designated hitter Kelly Buber hit a two-run home run off George Mason starter Stacen Gant. Scoring ahead of Buber was shortstop Todd Davison, who had doubled. UD added another run in the fifth on a leadoff homer by right fielder Dan Richardson to take a 3-1 lead.

George Mason charged back in front 5-3 on a home run by designated hitter Casey Slattery in the sixth.

UD made it 5-4 with a run in the seventh as Richardson doubled and scored after second baseman Ryan Graham singled and centerfield Matt Cooksey committed a fielding error.

UD relief pitcher Mitch Heckert entered the game in the bottom of the inning for McGuire, who walked four and gave up two hits, including the big home run. He also struck out nine batters.

The Hens tied the game 5-5 in the top of the eighth inning when catcher Brian Valichka scored on a wild pitch after reaching base with a leadoff single. However, George Mason struck back with back-to-back home runs by third baseman Chris Fournier and shortstop Tyler Youngs to pull ahead 7-5, chasing Heckert and bringing on another UD reliever, Chad Kerfoot, who gave up a two-run triple to Cooksey. At the end of the eighth, George Mason had a 9-5 lead.

Richardson got his third hit of the day, a single, to open the Hens’ half of the ninth inning but was stranded.

The Hens will play an elimination game at noon, Thursday, May 26, against the loser of tonight’s game between top seed UNC Wilmington and Hofstra University.
