UD women’s basketball advances to semifinals

2:56 p.m., March 10, 2005--Getting its Colonial Athletic Association tournament championship quest off to a strong start, the top-seeded University of Delaware women’s basketball team defeated Virginia Commonwealth University 71-56 on Thursday afternoon at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va.

Virginia Commonwealth broke on top 2-0 but the Fightin’ Blue Hens, playing with a great deal of energy, quickly countered and built a 39-18 lead by halftime. The Hens continued to stretch the lead until about midway through the second half, when Virginia Commonwealth picked up the pace and began whittling away at the margin.

UD sophomore guard Tyresa Smith scored a game-high 14 points and had seven assists. Five Hens scored in double figures.

With the victory, the 24-4 Hens advance to the tournament semifinals and will face the winner of this afternoon’s game between James Madison University and Towson University at 5 p.m., Friday. The championship game will be held at noon, Saturday.

The games are being broadcast live on WVUD, 91.3FM, and also via the Internet. To watch online, go to [www.gomason.com] and click on the CAA women’s championship logo or visit the UD athletics site at [www.udel.edu/sportsinfo] and click on the link for the tournament web site.
