Campbell, Pollack win women’s tennis title

11:04 a.m., Oct. 17, 2005--The University of Delaware doubles tennis team of Amanda Campbell and Susan Pollack captured the women’s flight A championship at the Hampton Roads (Va.) Collegiate Tennis Invitational held Friday through Sunday.

Campbell and Pollack defeated Lauren Cash and Barbara Zidek of the College of William & Mary 8-2 in the finals. To reach the championship match, they defeated Jessica Brouwer and Bethan James of Virginia Tech in the semifinals and Mariel Ballester and Andrea Fusea of George Mason University in the quarterfinals.

UD’s Julie Schiller and Sari Shuster dropped a 6-3 decision to Kristy Borza and Annie Davies of the University of Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals of the women’s B-1 doubles draw.

In B-2 doubles, Brittany Barsky and Alexa Dragonette defeated Caroline Downs and Camila Noldin of Radford University in the quarterfinals and Kate Miglin and Rebecca Morse-Karzen of Mary Washington College in the semifinals before falling to Steph Cohen and Andriann Gin of Georgetown University in the finals.

In A singles, Campbell defeated Kristin Nordstrom of James Madison University in the round of 16 before falling to Victoria Konstantinova of Virginia Commonwealth University 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Pollack reached the quarterfinals, where she fell 7-5, 7-5 to Victoria Vaynberg of Syracuse University.

In B-1 singles, Shuster reached the quarterfinals, falling 6-3, 6-2 to Carmelia Carapcea of the University of Maryland Baltimore County. In B-2 singles, Liz Perlow defeated Annie Davies of Pittsburgh 8-4 in the consolation bracket quarterfinals.

In C-1 singles, Dragonette fell to Stacy Kent of Hofstra University in the consolation bracket round of 32 when she could not continue due to injury. In C-2 singles, Barsky fell to Joy Adewumi of UMBC 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

In D-1 singles, Kate Iannelli defeated Jillian Schalk of Hofstra 8-2 in the consolation quarterfinals. Schiller reached the quarterfinals of D-2 singles before falling to Annie Day of James Madison University.

The UD women’s tennis team will return to action at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 18, with a home match against Temple University.
