Blue Hen tennis teams sweep Hoyas 4-3, 6-1

John Tully is nearing the UD record for career wins.
11:17 a.m., April 13, 2005--The University of Delaware tennis teams swept Georgetown University in matches played Tuesday at the Delaware Field House courts as senior John Tully moved to within one win of the all-time UD record for singles victories in a career.

Tully defeated Georgetown's Erik Bildman 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to raise his career record to 56-45. The current UD record of 57 victories is held by Jon Zolin, who played from 1971-75.

Tully also teamed with Robert Wirth to post an 8-4 win over Bildman and Eric Conrad at the No. 1 doubles position as the Fightin’ Blue Hens men’s team defeated the Hoyas 4-3.

Also posting wins for the Hens were Jonathan Schwartz at No. 5 singles, Philip Wayne at No. 6 singles, and the team of Jesse Carl and Jason Hanschman at No. 2 doubles. UD’s No. 3 doubles team of Wayne and Sammy Carl was defeated 8-6 by Ted Tywang and Etienne Paris to snap a 12-match win streak.

The UD women’s team defeated Georgetown 6-1, as freshman Susan Pollack posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Stephanie Cohen at No. 1 singles to improve to 19-7 on the season, giving her the second highest single season win total ever by a Hen freshman. Elly Giese went 24-2 as a freshman in 1998-99. Pollack also teamed with Alexa Dragonette to down Georgetown's No. 1 doubles team of Liddy Bartell and Adriann Gin.

Also posting wins for the Hens were Sari Shuster at No. 3 singles, Dragonette at No. 4 singles, Brittany Barsky at No. 5 singles, Katie Miller at No. 6 singles, and Perlow and Shuster at No. 3 doubles.

The UD men’s team has two home matches this weekend, and will face George Mason University at 2 p.m., Friday, April 15, and James Madison University at 9 a.m., Sunday, April 17.

The women’s team will host Towson University at 3 p.m., Thursday, April 14, and James Madison at 11 a.m., Sunday, April 17.

The Colonial Athletic Association championships will be held April 21-23 at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
