UD women’s tennis blanks Hofstra 7-0

UD’s Susan Pollack
12:59 p.m., April 11, 2005--The University of Delaware women's tennis team earned its eighth shutout of the year with a 7-0 victory over Hofstra University in a Colonial Athletic Association match played Sunday afternoon in Hempstead, N.Y. The Fightin’ Blue Hens men’s team was edged 4-3 in its match against the Pride.

The UD women improved to 13-5 overall and 2-1 in CAA as they won all three doubles matches to earn a point and then swept the six singles matches, winning each in straight sets.

The UD men earned the doubles point but were defeated in four of the six singles matches. They fell to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the CAA.

For UD, singles wins were earned by Susan Pollack at No. 1, Liz Perlow at No. 2, Sari Shuster at No. 3, Alexa Dragonette at No. 4, Katie Miller at No. 5 and Brittany Barsky at No. 6. Pollack and Perlow each won their 18th singles matches of the season, the highest total for a UD player since Elly Giese won a school-record 24 matches in 1998-99.

In doubles, Pollack and Dragonette won at No. 1, Miller and Barsky at No. 2, and Perlow and Shuster at No. 3.

The UD men took two of the three doubles matches as Jesse Carl and Jason Hanschman won at No. 2 spot and Philip Wayne and Sammy Carl won at No. 3, improving to 14-1 with their 12th straight victory. The 14 wins is the third highest single season total in school history for a UD doubles team.

In singles, the Hens got wins from Josh Ditman at No. 3 and from Hanschman at No. 4. UD’s No. 1 player, John Tully, fell to Nikola Djordjevic but played in his 100th career singles match, a school record.

In earlier action Friday, the UD men’s team fell 4-3 and the women’s team fell 6-1 to the University of North Carolina Wilmington in matches played on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.
