10 ballplayers compete in summer leagues

9:55 a.m., Aug. 31, 2005--Ten members of the University of Delaware baseball team competed in collegiate leagues during the summer.

Senior infielder Todd Davison played for the 22-19 Cotuit Kettleers in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. Davison started 40 games and played all four infield positions, hitting .257 and leading the team with 17 walks. He was second on the team with 17 runs scored and third on the team with 17 runs batted in.

Incoming junior college transfer catcher Ryan Engelhardt played for the Staunton (Va.) Braves in the Valley League. Engelhardt caught 22 games for the 22-24 Braves and had a .992 fielding percentage. He was second on the team with a .390 on base percentage.

Three UD juniors, outfielder Brian Hagerich and pitchers Billy Harris and Mitch Heckert, played for the 22-19 Manchester Silkworms in the New England Collegiate League (NECBL). Hagerich had 34 starts in the outfield and was second on the team with 18 runs scored. Harris had 15 appearances, including eight starts, and led the team with 48 strikeouts. Heckert finished with a 6-1 record and a 1.99 earned run average, the six victories topping the league and setting a team record. He was named a starting pitcher in the NECBL All-Star Game.

Also in the NECBL, Sophomore Brandon Menchaca played outfield for the 20-22 North Adams Steeplecats. He started 28 games.

Two UD players were in the Atlantic Coast Baseball League, sophomore third baseman Adam Tsakonas with the 27-13 Quakertown Blazers, who won the league title, and sophomore pitcher Matt Heppner with the 17-22 Long Island Collegians.

Tsakonas finished fifth in the league with both a .336 average and 30 runs scored, and had an impressive .415 on-base percentage. Heppner had a 1-1 record and a 3.60 earned run average in four starts.

Junior Dan Kozek played outfield and first base for the 10-19 Protocall Starz of the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League.

Junior Chad Kerfoot pitched for the Youse’s Maryland Orioles of the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League, which went on to win the 2005 All American Amateur Baseball Association championship. Kerfoot made two starts in the AAABA tournament, pitching a complete game shutout in the semifinal game. Kerfoot led the 50-17 Orioles in wins and innings, finishing with a 7-3 record, a 1.65 earned run average and 45 strikeouts.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens, under Head Coach Jim Sherman, will begin fall practice Sept. 11. They will open the 2006 season on Feb. 24 at the University of Richmond.
