UD athletes presented Sportsmanship Awards

9:42 a.m., June 2, 2005--The University of Delaware athletics department has announced the winners of the Blue Hen Team Sportsmanship Awards for the 2005 spring athletics season.

Award recipients are Lyra Sawzin in women's rowing, Lindsey Greer in women's lacrosse, Chris Collins in men's lacrosse, Nick Riordan in men's outdoor track and field, Reagan Hastings in women's outdoor track and field, Lauren Gardner in softball, Dave Harden in baseball, Adam Liebman in men's tennis, Katie Miller in women's tennis and Steve Banks in golf.

Now in its second year, the Blue Hen Sportsmanship program honors those scholar-athletes who have been outstanding role models and displayed outstanding sportsmanship towards their teammates, coaches, opponents and game officials. The winners are selected by the coaching staffs of each sport.

"We are proud to honor these individuals for their efforts in showing true sportsmanship throughout the year," UD Director of Athletics Edgar N. Johnson said. "These special scholar-athletes have shown that you can be an outstanding competitor on the field and still accomplish your goals with great character and sportsmanship while showing respect to your opponents and officials."

Sawzin, a senior captain and a member of the varsity eights boat, was voted the women’s rowing team's outstanding performer this season. Greer was a senior defender on the nationally ranked women’s lacrosse team, and Collins was a senior co-captain and second team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection for the nationally ranked men’s lacrosse team.

Riordan was a senior jumper and sprinter for the men’s track and field team, and Hastings was a senior pole vaulter for the women’s team.

Gardner was a senior captain for the softball team, and Harden was a senior captain for the baseball team whose season was cut short when he was struck by a car and seriously injured while walking near campus on April 8.

Liebman was named the winner of the Lee J. Hyncik Award as the junior letter winner on the men's tennis team with the highest grade point average, and Miller was a senior co-captain for the women’s team. Banks, a senior, earned three letters as a member of the golf team.
