UD women’s soccer picked 6th in CAA

11:20 a.m., Aug. 11, 2005--The University of Delaware women’s soccer team has been picked to finish sixth in the 12-team Colonial Athletic Association, according to a vote of conference coaches.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens finished 9-6-3 overall and 4-4-1 in the CAA last season.

UD, led by veteran Head Coach Scott Grzenda, returns senior midfielder Shannon Alger, a first team All-CAA selection, and forward Alli D’Amico, who was named to the CAA All-Rookie team last season.

Also back are defenders Melissa Kunisky and Allison Kendro, who is a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America candidate, and junior goalkeeper Bonnie Mills.

Virginia Commonwealth University was picked to finish first, followed in the top five by Hofstra University, the College of William and Mary, James Madison University and George Mason University. Virginia Commonwealth returns eight starters, including CAA Player of the Year Sandra Anger, from a team that went 15-7 and won the conference championship in 2004.

The CAA was ranked ninth among the 31 NCAA Division I conferences last season and placed three teams in the NCAA championship tournament field.

UD will open the season Aug. 26 at St. Joseph’s University with the home opener Sept. 9 against Temple University. The schedule includes a trip to a tournament at North Carolina State University Sept. 2-3 and the Delaware Adidas Classic, featuring the University of Northern Iowa and Georgetown University, Sept. 16-17, at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.
