Delaware softball team edged out by JMU

11:10 a.m., May 9, 2005--The University of Delaware softball team was edged out of the fourth and final Colonial Athletic Association playoff berth by James Madison University, which won two of three games in a critical weekend series.

The teams split the first two games of the series in a doubleheader played Saturday in Harrisonburg, Va., with the Fightin’ Blue Hens dropping the opener 8-0 then coming back to win the second game 5-4.

In the final game Sunday, the Hens nearly prevailed after jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Senior right fielder Kelley Pastic, who set a UD record by playing in the 195th game of her career, reached on an error and moved to third on a single by freshman second baseman Allison Borchers. Both scored on a single by freshman first baseman Barbara Traynor and a subsequent James Madison throwing error.

UD sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat threw two scoreless innings before James Madison broke through with a run in the bottom of the third. The Dukes plated two more in the fifth to earn the victory and, with it, a berth in the CAA championship tournament.

In the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Hens managed just three hits and James Madison had a breakout third inning, scoring seven runs. In the second game, UD broke on top 4-0 in the first inning with the big hits being doubles by catcher Jessica Ralston and left fielder Lauren Gardner.

The Hens ended the season 28-25 overall and 6-11 in the conference and missed the conference tournament for the first time since UD joined the CAA.
