Blue Hen softball team splits with Maryland

9:23 a.m., May 5, 2005--With sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat throwing a shutout in the opener, the University of Delaware softball team split a doubleheader at the University of Maryland on Wednesday afternoon, winning the first game 2-0 but falling in the second 11-1.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens are now 27-23 as they enter a key Colonial Athletic Association weekend series at James Madison University. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 7, and a single game at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 8.

James Madison is 6-9 in conference play and the Hens are 5-9, with both battling for the fourth and final berth in the CAA championship tournament. The Hens must win two of the three games to return to the tournament, where last season they reached the title game against Hofstra University.

Against Maryland, Sloat scattered eight hits for the shutout win to raise her record to 16-11 this season. The Hens scored both of their runs in the top of the seventh when first baseman Barbara Traynor doubled home Allison Borchers and then scored on a single by Lauren Gardner.

Maryland’s bats came to life in the second game, with UD’s Lindsay Jones taking the loss. Traynor had a pair of hits, including a double.
