Joseph, Jones combine for softball no-hitter

11:21 a.m., April 27, 2005--The University of Delaware softball team swept a doubleheader from Rutgers University on Tuesday afternoon at Delaware Field, winning the first game 6-1 and the second 8-0. In the second game, two Fightin’ Blue Hens pitchers, senior Jenn Joseph and junior Lindsay Jones, combined for the 13th no-hitter in UD history and the first since 2000.

Joseph started the second game and allowed just a leadoff walk in three innings. She had to leave after being struck on the wrist by a pitch while batting and was relieved by Jones, who worked two perfect innings in relief.

With the victories, the Hens improved to 24-20. They are scheduled to play a nonconference doubleheader at Bucknell University on Wednesday afternoon.

UD will play a Colonial Athletic Association series against Towson University this weekend, with a doubleheader beginning at noon, Saturday, April 30, and a single game at noon, Sunday, May 1, at Delaware Field.

In the opening game victory, UD sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat earned her 14th victory of the season by scattering four hits in six innings. Kelsey Knapp worked one scoreless inning of relief.

Designated hitter Barbara Traynor and catcher Jessica Ralston had two hits each, with Traynor driving in two runs and Ralston ripping a triple. Allison Borchers scored a pair of runs for the Hens.

In the second game, designated hitter Melissa Morris and left fielder Lauren Gardner had two hits each, with Morris driving home two runs and Garner scoring a pair. Morris and right fielder Kelley Pastic both had triples.
