Delaware softball team splits with Villanova

3:26 p.m., April 21, 2005--The University of Delaware softball team split a doubleheader against Villanova University on Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Field, winning the first game 1-0, then dropping the second 6-3.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens, who are now 21-19, will next travel to the University of Maryland Baltimore County for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 21.

Against Villanova, UD won the opener on a three-hit shutout by sophomore pitcher Carolynne Sloat. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the second inning when UD senior left fielder Lauren Gardner hit a two-out single, stole second and scored on a single by freshman center fielder Katie Lee.

Villanova took command early in the second game, scoring five runs in the second inning off UD starter Jenn Joseph. She was relieved in the fourth inning by Lindsay Jones, who worked four scoreless innings for the Hens.

UD freshman second baseman Allison Borchers had two hits and drove in all three runs with a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning.
