Hens’ softball coach wins 500th game

UD’s B.J. Ferguson
9:46 a.m., April 14, 2005--University of Delaware Head Coach B.J. Ferguson won the 500th game of her career as the Fightin’ Blue Hens softball team swept a doubleheader from Rider University, 8-0 and 6-0, on Wednesday afternoon in Newark.

Ferguson becomes the 41st active softball coach in NCAA Division I to reach the 500-win mark and joins former UD baseball coach Bob Hannah and former volleyball coach Barbara Viera as the third Hen coach to win 500 career games in one sport. Ferguson also has 103 wins in 12 years as the UD women’s tennis coach.

With the victories, the Hens improved to 18-17 on the season as they prepare for a three-game weekend Colonial Athletic Association series against Drexel University at Delaware Field. The teams will play a single game beginning at noon, Saturday, April 16, and a doubleheader beginning at noon, Sunday, April 17.

In Wednesday’s victories, sophomore pitcher Carolynne Sloat threw a three-hit shutout in the opener, and senior Jenn Joseph and sophomore Kelsey Knapp combined for a three-hit shutout in the second game.

Freshman second baseman Allison Borchers had two hits and five runs batted in to pace the Hens in the first game. Catcher Natalie Savona and center fielder Katie Lee had two hits each, with Savona ripping a double, and Joseph hit a home run.

Lee hit a home run in the second game and Joseph had a pair of hits, including a triple. Outfielders Lauren Gardner and Heather Wrenn also hit triples and first baseman Barbara Traynor hit a double.
