Blue Hen softball team sweeps Penn 9-7, 4-0

10:14 a.m., March 17, 2005--Powered by a sophomore pitcher and freshmen hitters, the University of Delaware softball team swept a doubleheader against the University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon in Philadelphia.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens won the first game 9-7, with freshmen Kimberly Williams and Allison Borchers blasting home runs in a seven-run sixth inning, and won the second game 4-0 on a shutout by sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat.

With the victories, UD improved to 7-8 as the Hens prepare to participate in the weekend Bash at the Beach Tournament sponsored by Delaware State University and to be held in Georgetown. UD will face the University of Albany and Providence College on Friday and Delaware State and Monmouth University on Saturday, with the championship playoffs scheduled Sunday.

In the first game against Penn, the Hens trailed 7-2 entering the sixth inning but took the lead with the key hits being a three-run homer by Williams and a grand slam by Borchers.

Sloat dominated the second game, scattering four hits and striking out four batters. She has pitched two straight shutouts and has not allowed an earned run in 25 consecutive innings.

UD designated hitter Barbara Traynor, also a freshman, had four hits on the afternoon, two in each game.
