Blue Hen softball team splits games with Cornell

10:16 a.m., March 14, 2005--Taking the second game 5-0, the University of Delaware softball team split a doubleheader against Cornell University on Sunday afternoon at Delaware Field.

Cornell won the opener 4-3 by scoring two runs in the first inning and another in the second. The Big Red had a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Fightin’ Blue Hens came to life and scored three runs.

UD freshman center fielder Katie Lee reached on an infield single and moved to second on a bunt single by freshman second baseman Allison Borchers. Senior right fielder Kelley Pastic flied out, then senior pitcher Jenn Joseph tripled to score both Lee and Borchers.

Freshman first baseman Barbara Traynor doubled to scored Joseph, but Cornell reliever Jenn Meunier came on to end the rally.

Joseph took the loss for the Hens.

In the second game, UD scored four runs in the bottom of the first, which was more than enough as sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat scattered six hits and struck out four batters for the win.

In the first inning, Pastic singled with one out, stole second and advanced to third when Joseph reached on an error. Traynor then singled to center to score Pastic, and a bunt single by sophomore third baseman Michelle Plant loaded the bases.

Joseph scored when freshman shortstop Kimberly Williams was hit by a pitch, and Traynor scored when senior leftfielder Lauren Gardner singled. After a pop out, Lee singled to score Plant with the Hens' fourth run of the inning.

UD loaded the bases with one out in the third on singles by Plant, Gardner and freshman catcher Erin Stough. Borchers worked a walk to score Plant.

Plant had three hits in six trips to the plate and scored two runs in the doubleheader.

UD is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, when the Hens will travel to the University of Pennsylvania for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
