Delaware softball team reaches tourney semifinals

9:47 a.m., March 7, 2005--The University of Delaware softball team reached the semifinals of the Pirate Clash tournament in Greenville, N.C., before falling 4-3 to Elon University.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens went 3-3 in the tournament, held on the campus of East Carolina University, and opened preliminary action Friday with a 6-3 victory over Elon. In that game, UD senior pitcher Jenn Joseph scattered six hits for the victory and freshmen Allison Borchers, Barbara Traynor and Kelly Williams had two hits apiece. In the second game Friday, UD pitcher Carolynn Sloat struck out eight batters but the Hens fell 3-0 to Marshall University.

UD also split two games on Saturday, defeating Binghamton University 4-1 and falling 3-1 to North Carolina State University. Sloat earned the victory against Binghamton. Borchers delivered the key hit, a three-run triple, and scored on a single by Kelley Pastic, who had three hits in the game. Joseph took the loss against North Carolina State.

The tournament eliminations began Sunday, with the Hens defeating Liberty University 4-2 in the opening round. Sloat picked up the win, allowing just two hits and striking out seven batters. Borchers had three walks and scored two runs for the Hens.

UD was eliminated by Elon in the semifinals, with Joseph taking the loss. Elon jumped out to 3-0 lead with two runs in the first inning and another in the second before the Hens battled back to tie the game 3-3. Elon broke the tie in the sixth inning for the win. Borchers and Williams had two hits each for the Hens.

Weather permitting, UD is scheduled to play a doubleheader at the University of Maryland Baltimore County on Tuesday afternoon and then return home for a doubleheader against Cornell University beginning at noon Sunday.
