Riccio, Jones excel in football scrimmage

9:45 a.m., Aug. 25, 2005--The University of Delaware football team continued preparations for its season opener Saturday, Sept. 10, against Lehigh University with a 90-minute scrimmage on Wednesday afternoon on Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens offense, directed by senior quarterback Sonny Riccio and featuring wide receiver Joe Bleymaier and running back Danny Jones, had a strong showing on the afternoon.

“We were pleased,” UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler said of the scrimmage, which drew about 300 Hen fans. “We definitely took a step in the right direction and got some things done. We’ll be anxious to watch the tapes. It was good to get the kids in the stadium and put them in some game conditions. We were pleased with the intensity, and our offense looked good.”

Riccio, a transfer from the University of Missouri who started all 13 games in 2004, took part in more than 30 plays during the scrimmage and was impressive, throwing scoring passes of 20 and 40 yards to Bleymaier.

Junior backup quarterback Ryan Carty took about 20 snaps, and sophomore Jarryd Moyer took about 15 snaps and completed a 23-yard touchdown pass to redshirt freshman Aaron Love, who caught a tipped ball and raced into the end zone.

Jones, a freshman, enjoyed a big day in the backfield, racing 50 yards up the middle for one touchdown and later scoring on a 19-yard run. Junior Niquan Lee also had several impressive runs for the Hens.

Freshman kicker Zach Hobby converted on all four of his extra point attempts and hit a 42-yard field goal.

UD will hold a second scrimmage on Wednesday, Aug. 31. The season opener against Lehigh, which is favored to win the Patriot League this season, will kick off at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, at Delaware Stadium.
