UD athletes selected Arthur Ashe Scholars 12:07 p.m., April 15, 2005--University of Delaware sophomores Kaili Kao, a member of the field hockey team, and Chris Dixon, a member of the mens track and field team, have been selected 2005 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by the journal Black Issues in Higher Education. The award honors male and female scholar-athletes of color who best exemplify the high standards of scholarship, athleticism and humanitarianism set by the late tennis great, Arthur Ashe Jr. To be eligible for nomination, scholar-athletes must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher, be an important member of their team and be active on campus and in the community. This year, 600 scholar-athletes were nominated. Kao, a two-year standout on defense for the Hens, is majoring in international relations and minoring in French, business and religious studies. She appeared in 14 games and started seven in 2004, helping UD post a 15-7 record, win its first Colonial Athletic Association championship and advance to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1988. She is enrolled in the UD Honors Program, is a dean's list student and has twice been named to the CAA Academic Honor Roll and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association academic team. She is a member of the Golden Key, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Alpha Lambda Delta honor societies. Dixon, one of UDs top sprinters and hurdlers the last two seasons, is majoring in computer engineering. He helped lead the Hens to a fourth-place finish at last year's CAA championships, finishing second in the 400-meter hurdles and fifth in the 110-meter at the meet. Dixon is a dean's list student, has been named to the CAA Academic Honor Roll, was awarded the UD Certificate of Distinction and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. He has been active in his hometown as a volunteer with the Landisville (Pa.) Church of God, the Crispus Attucks Homeless Shelter and the Landisville Elementary School.
