UD’s John Schneider is playing in Syracuse

1:53 p.m., June 28, 2005--Former UD catcher John Schneider is one step away from Major League Baseball as he is playing for the Class AAA Syracuse SkyChiefs of the International League.

Syracuse is the top farm team of the Toronto Blue Jays, who took Schneider in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2002.

Schneider has appeared in 19 games for Syracuse since being called up from the Class A Dunedin Blue Jays of the Florida State League in May, and he is batting .212 with one home run and a pair of doubles. While with Dunedin, he was batting .262.

In other minor league baseball news, two former Fightin’ Blue Hens are on the roster of the Class A Palm Beach Cardinals of the Florida State League. Pitcher Mark Michael, who was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2003 draft, is 2-3 with a 4.19 earned run average and has struck out 32 batters in nine starts. Outfielder Reid Gorecki is batting .191 in 19 games for Palm Beach after starting the season with the Class AA Springfield (Mo.) Cardinals.

Infielder Kris Dufner, who was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2003, is batting .291 for the Class A Visalia Oaks of the California League. The Oaks are an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Catcher Brian Valichka, who was drafted by the Texas Rangers after the 2005 season, is batting .182 in four games with the Class A Spokane Indians of the Northwest League, which plays a short season.

In the independent Golden Baseball League, shortshop Andrew Salvo is batting .294 for the Chico Outlaws. He has five doubles and nine runs batted in.
