Blue Hens rowing team opens its spring season

4:01 p.m., March 14, 2005--The University of Delaware women's rowing team opened its 2005 spring season by competing against St. Joseph's and Lehigh universities on Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

UD’s second varsity eights boat of Kenna Plangemann, Liz Martin, Nikki Jackowsky, Christina Stanley, Lindsey Wood, Jenn Boutin, Cathy Savarese, Stephanie Miller and Jamie Schoenewald posted the Fightin’ Blue Hens’ only win of the day, completing the course in 7:33 to finish ahead of St. Joseph's and Lehigh’s A and B boats.

The UD freshman eights boat finished second in its race. The crew consisted of Cami Off, Justine Strausser, Ashley Sparano, Lauren Taylor, Meghan Doletzky, Emily Canniff, Lana Rivers, Stephanie Hendrixson and Kristen Cannatelli.

St. Joseph's won the varsity four races, followed across the line by the UD A boat of Jill Goldman, Maria Bellumori, Lynn Hamski, Katie Broullire and Susan Carbine. The UD B boat of Callie Tegan, Laura Belfi, Nicky Bradley, Carly Gonzalez and Alyssa Hankins came in fourth.

St. Joseph’s took the novice four event while UD came in second. The crew consisted of Callie Tegan, Carly Gonzalez, Alyssa Hankins, Lindsay Decktor and Lily Chavarriaga

St. Joseph's also won the varsity eights, with UD finishing third. The UD team consisted of Alison Harrington, Maureen Gillen, Lane Kohl, Laura Beaufort, Melanie Turner, Lyra Sawzin, Jess Kostick, Betsy Seeger and Emily McElwain

The Hens will return to action against the U.S. Naval Academy on Wednesday, March 23, in Annapolis.
