Red Cross celebrates centennial

11:32 a.m., March 10, 2005--This year, the American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula is celebrating its centennial by showcasing its many activities in Delaware and Maryland for the past 100 years.

Teaming up with the Historical Society for Delaware, with a $5,000 grant from the Delaware Humanities Forum, the Red Cross will launch its celebration with “An Evening with Clara Barton,” a free presentation, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 15, at the Delaware History Museum, 504 Market St., Wilmington. Historical actress Mary Ann Jung will portray Barton as she recounts her work as a nurse on the battlefield during the Civil War and as founder of the American Red Cross in 1881.

Free parking will be available for the event at the Colonial parking lot on 6th and Shipley streets.

After the kickoff event, each decade of the history of the Red Cross in Delaware and Maryland will be displayed on 3-by-6-foot panels in the windows of participating merchants and organizations, which include

  • Christina Cultural Arts Center,
  • Greater Wilmington Convention & Visitors Bureau,
  • Delaware College of Art and Design,
  • Delaware State University,
  • Happy Harry’s,
  • Historical Society of Delaware,
  • Hotel du Pont,
  • Minster’s Jewelers,
  • Ninth Street Book Store and
  • Wilmington Trust, Rodney Square.

By visiting any of these locations and filling out a questionnaire, persons are eligible to win a $1,500 grand prize shopping spree, a second-place prize of jewelry or other merchandise, services or gift cards. Every entrant will receive a prize.

After approximately a month in the Wilmington area, the exhibit will move to other locations in the Delmarva region.
