UD women’s lacrosse signs 15 standouts for 2006

4 p.m., April 1, 2005--First-year UD women’s lacrosse head coach Kim Ciarrocca has announced the signing of 15 high school standouts who will attend UD and compete for the team in 2006.

Ciarrocca’s first recruiting class includes midfielders Michelle Axe of Wilmington, Lauren Cannon of Reistertown, Md., Alexis Curcio of East Northport, N.Y., Bethany Henneman from Reistertown, Md., Amanda Lahiff of Lansdale, Pa., and Alexandra McClammer of Ellicott City, Md.

Defenders signing for the recruiting class of 2006 include Jordan Bryan from Lewes, Jen Jarvis of Westbury, N.Y., Becca Kane from Arnold, Md., Stacey McPortland of North Massapequa, N.Y., and Erin Zimmerman of Malvern Pa.

Signing for attack position were Cara Cerone of Annapolis, Md., and Debbie Sloan from West Chester, Pa. Goalkeeper signings included Jess Cerveny of Islip, N.Y., and Suzy Herlihy of Clarksville, Md.,

“We are very excited about our first incoming freshman class,” Ciarrocca said. “As a coaching staff, we truly believe this class will take Delaware lacrosse to national recognition.”

Ciarrocca came to UD after leading Temple University to seven NCAA Tournament appearances in the last 12 years.

Currently, the Hens are 4-2 and are ranked No. 15 in the latest Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Top 20 poll, the team’s best ranking since 2001.

Ciarrocca’s first recruit from the First State, Bryan is a fourth-year starter on defense for head coach Gretchen Wyschock at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes. She earned second team All-State honors as a junior last year.

Cerone, a three-year starter for Annapolis High School, scored 70 goals and dished 57 assists in 2004 to earn a spot on The Washington Post All-Area team. A two-time all-county selection, Cerone also is a standout in cross country and basketball.

Cannon, a two-year starter in tennis at Notre Dame Prep, also has been a two-year starter in lacrosse, leading the team to a conference title in 2003.

Cerveny, a competitor in lacrosse, soccer and bowling at Islip High School, was the lacrosse team captain as a junior for the 2004 season. She has earned all-league and all-county honors and has competed for the New York National Team. She served as goalkeeper for the Long Island Empire State team and also was a goalkeeper in field hockey, where she helped lead the team to a league title.

Curcio has earned three letters in soccer, one in basketball and has been a three-year varsity performer in lacrosse at North Point High School. She also helped lead the lacrosse team to a two-year record of 26-2, including two Suffolk County titles and a pair of state semifinal appearances. She also was all-county in lacrosse as a junior in 2004.

Henneman, a standout lacrosse and soccer player at Dulaney High School, captained both teams while leading each to a county title. A two-year letter-winner in lacrosse, Henneman also garnered all-division honors as a junior in 2004. She is a member of the National Honor Society.

Herlihy, as a goalkeeper in lacrosse for River High School, earned All-Howard County, Washington Post first team All-Area and Baltimore Sun first team All-Area honors as a junior in 2004. She also was named to The Washington Post honorable mention All-Metro team as a sophomore. A member of the National Honor Society, Herlihy earned All-Howard honors as a goalkeeper in field hockey, while leading her basketball team to two county titles.

Jarvis is a two-year letter-winner in field hockey and lacrosse at Carle Place High School. A two-time all county and three-time all-conference selection in field hockey, she has been an all-county and two-time conference pick in lacrosse. Jarvis was captain of both teams and, in her sophomore and senior years, was named the team’s most valuable field hockey player. A National Honor Society member, she also helped lead her field hockey and lacrosse teams to Long Island Class C tittles.

Kane has competed in cross country and field hockey and is a third-year starter in lacrosse. A winner of three varsity letters in cross country and one in field hockey, she has been named her lacrosse team’s defensive player-of-the-year for the past two seasons.

Lahiff is a three-year starter in field hockey and lacrosse at North Penn High School. She earned second team all-conference honors in lacrosse as a sophomore and was named most valuable player last season. She also was an all-conference selection in field hockey.

McClammer, who also plays basketball at Mt. Hebron High School, has earned two letters each as a starter at middle hitter in volleyball and attack in lacrosse.

McPartland is a competitor in lacrosse, soccer and gymnastics at Farmingdale High School, where she earned all-state honors in gymnastics while leading her team to a conference title. She also was an all-county selection in soccer, leading the squad to two straight second-place finishes in county competition. A three-year standout in lacrosse, she earned All-American and all-county honors as a junior and led her lacrosse teams to three straight county titles and the Long Island, N.Y., finals.

Sloan, a three-time letter winner in field hockey and lacrosse at West Chester East High School, earned first-team all-area honors as a sophomore and a senior attack in field hockey. She also has been a three-time all-area and all-conference selection in lacrosse. A two-time team captain of the lacrosse team, Sloan earned All-American honors as a junior. Her uncle, Scott Williams, was a former cross country runner at UD.

Zimmerman is a three-year starting forward in soccer, where she has received three all-league honors and two all-area recognitions, while leading the team in scoring as a junior and a senior. In her fourth season starting on defense in lacrosse, she helped lead Great Valley to three conference titles and a state championship in 2002. In 2003, she led the lacrosse squad to the state semifinals, and, in 2004, the team finished second in state competition. She also has earned all-league and all-area honors during each of the last three seasons, including All-American honors last spring.
