Delaware hosts Hofstra in key softball series

B.J. Ferguson
3:27 p.m., April 8, 2005--University of Delaware softball Head Coach B.J. Ferguson will seek her 500th career victory as the Fightin’ Blue Hens face Hofstra University in a key three-game Colonial Athletic Association series this weekend at Delaware Field.

Ferguson, in her 25th year as head coach of the Hens, currently has a record of 498-448-4 and is just two wins shy of becoming the 41st active softball coach in NCAA Division I to reach the 500-win plateau. She would be the third coach in UD history to record 500 career victories in one sport, joining former baseball coach Bob Hannah (1,053-464-4 from 1965-2000) and former volleyball coach Barbara Viera (682-433-4 from 1973-99).

The Hens, relying on a number of freshmen in the starting lineup, have won seven of their last eight games to improve to 16-14 and move two games over the .500 mark for the first time this season. UD is 3-3 in the conference while Hofstra is 1-1 in the conference and 20-12 overall.

Hofstra has won the CAA championship all three years it has been in the league, including last season’s narrow victory over the Hens in the conference tournament.

UD is led by freshman second baseman Allison Borchers, who leads the team with a .306 batting average, 26 hits, 16 runs batted in and 33 total bases. Freshman Barbara Traynor is batting .264 and has 23 hits, 12 RBI and 30 total bases, and freshman Natalie Savona is hitting .250 with 11 hits and two home runs.

Sophomore Carolynn Sloat leads the UD pitching staff with a 10-6 record, a 2.55 earned run average and 80 strikeouts. Senior pitcher Jenn Joseph is 5-8 in the circle with a 2.92 earned run average and 68 strikeouts.

The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday, April 9, a single game Sunday, April 10, with action on both days beginning at noon.
