Blue Hen football No. 5 in Sports Network poll

3:29 p.m., Sept. 26, 2005--The University of Delaware has moved up one spot to No. 5 in the new Sports Network NCAA Division I-AA poll, which features three Atlantic 10 Conference schools in the top six.

The University of New Hampshire is the new No. 1 team in the nation, with UD and James Madison University, at No. 6, close behind. The 3-0 Fightin’ Blue Hens received eight first-place votes in this week’s balloting, which followed a 35-23 victory over the College of the Holy Cross.

Rounding out the top 10 are Southern Illinois University at No. 2, Western Kentucky University at No. 3, the University of Montana at No. 4, Furman University at No. 7, the University of Northern Iowa at No. 8, Hampton University at No. 9 and California State Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo at No. 10.

Three other conference teams are in the top 25, with the College of William & Mary at No. 19, the University of Massachusetts at No. 21 and Hofstra University at No. 23. Lehigh University, which UD defeated 34-33 in overtime in the first game of the season, is ranked No. 11.

In individual statistical rankings, UD sophomore running back Omar Cuff is first in the nation in scoring with 20 points per game. He is sixth in rushing with 131.1 yards per game. Punt returner Aaron Love is seventh in the nation, at 16.9 yards per return.
