Delaware field hockey team 3rd in CAA poll 11:38 a.m., Aug. 11, 2005--The defending champion University of Delaware field hockey team has been picked to finish third in the Colonial Athletic Association in 2005, according to a poll of the conferences nine head coaches. Old Dominion University is favored to reclaim the championship after the Fightin Blue Hens ended the teams eight-year reign atop the CAA last season. Old Dominion received 60 total points to lead the poll, including four first-place votes and four second-place votes. The College of William and Mary placed second, with 52 points and three first-place votes, while UD had 51 points and the other two first-place votes. CAA newcomer Northeastern University, which has captured the past four America East Conference championships, followed with 43 points. Rounding out the poll were James Madison, Hofstra. Drexel, Virginia Commonwealth and Towson. UD, which posted a 15-7 overall record and won its first CAA field hockey championship in 2004 with a 5-1 victory over Hofstra, returns several key players, including junior back Amanda Warrington and goalkeeper Megan Allen. Warrington was named a second team All-American, the CAA tournament most valuable player and the conference defensive player of the year. Allen was first team All-CAA and led the league in goals allowed average (1.31) and shutouts (10). Another key player for the Hens is Katie Evans, a junior forward who was selected to compete on the U.S. national team in the Junior World Cup. UD, which is led by Head Coach Carol Miller, will open the season with a road trip to California. The Hens will face Pacific University on Aug. 27, the University of California at Berkeley on Aug. 28 and Stanford University on Aug. 29. UD will return home to host the Blue Hen Classic tournament Sept. 3-4 at Rullo Stadium. Participating teams include Duke University, Ohio State University and the University of Richmond. The CAA is traditionally one of the strongest field hockey conferences in the nation. Four teams were ranked in the top 15 in the final National Field Hockey Coaches Association NCAA Division I poll last season. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
