Blue Hens ranked 10th in Sports Network poll

9:17 a.m., Aug. 9, 2005--The University of Delaware football team has been ranked No. 10 in a preseason Sports Network NCAA Division I-AA poll announced Monday afternoon.

Voters in the poll included NCAA Division I-AA sports information directors and sportswriters and broadcasters who regularly cover the division.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens have now appeared in the preseason Sports Network top 25 for 14 straight seasons. UD was the top ranked team in the 2004 poll as it came off its 2003 national championship.

James Madison University, the defending national champion, was ranked No. 1, followed in the top five by Furman University, the University of Montana, Eastern Washington University and Southern Illinois University.

Georgia Southern University was ranked sixth, the University of New Hampshire seventh, Western Kentucky University eighth, the College of William and Mary ninth and UD 10th.

Five of Delaware's 2005 opponents were ranked in the top 20, including No. 1 James Madison (Oct. 23), No. 9 William and Mary (Nov. 12), No. 14 Lehigh University (Sept. 10) and No. 24 Hofstra University (Oct. 8).

The Hens, led by senior quarterback Sonny Riccio, will open preseason camp on Sunday, Aug. 14.
