Fightin’ Blue Hens 10th in I-AA consolidated poll

9:03 a.m., Aug. 2, 2005--The University of Delaware is ranked No. 10 in a consolidated preseason NCAA Division I-AA football poll on the web site I-AA.org, which has considered preseason prognostications by the magazines Lindy’s and Street and Smith’s and web sites for the Sports Network and Any Given Saturday.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens are ranked seventh by Street and Smith’s and Any Given Saturday, ninth by Lindy’s and 12th by the Sports Network.

UD is one of five Atlantic 10 Conference teams in the consolidated top 15. James Madison University, the defending national champion, is ranked No. 1, with the University of New Hampshire eighth, the College of William and Mary 11th and the University of Massachusetts 15th.

The University of Montana and Furman University are tied for second, with Eastern Washington University fourth, Georgia Southern University fifth, Southern Illinois University sixth, Western Kentucky University seventh and Northwestern State University ninth.

UD went 9-4 overall and 7-1 in the conference in 2004, capturing a share of the Atlantic 10 championship for the second consecutive season. Head Coach K.C. Keeler and the Hens also advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA championship tournament, where they reached the quarterfinals before falling to William and Mary.

In 2003, the Hens went 15-1, won a share of the conference title and won the national championship.

UD will open pre-season drills on Friday, Aug. 12, with football media day set for 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 18, at Delaware Stadium.

The 2005 season will open with a game at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, against Lehigh University of the Patriot League.
