Yost, Bennett compete in NCAA regional meet

Mike Yost
9:45 a.m., May 27, 2005--Two University of Delaware athletes, Mike Yost and Casey Bennett, are competing today in the NCAA Division I outdoor track and field regional championship meet at Icahn Stadium on the campus of Manhattan College.

Both Yost and Bennett were automatic qualifiers after winning Colonial Athletic Association championships in April.

Yost is one of 27 competitors in the men’s discus throw, which will begin at noon. Bennett, who is competing in the regional meet for the second straight year, is one of 28 competitors in the pole vault, which will begin at 3 p.m.

Casey Bennett
Yost has won eight outdoor meet titles in the hammer and discus throws this spring. He finished 15th in the hammer and 19th in the discus at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes in America (IC4A) regional meet two weeks ago at Princeton. His career best throw in the discus is 158 feet, 2 inches, the seventh longest throw in UD history.

Bennett, who has won 18 career indoor and outdoor meet pole vault titles, earned All-East honors two weeks ago by placing seventh in the event at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) meet, also at Princeton. Her career best vault is 12 feet, 6 inches, which is the UD record.

University of North Carolina junior Vikas Gowda is the favorite in the men's discus, and University of Georgia junior Kierney Hiteshew is the favorite in the women's pole vault. Meet champions will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, to be held June 8-11 at Sacramento (Calif.) State University.
