UD men’s soccer team opens Colonial play

3:08 p.m., Oct. 3, 2005--The University of Delaware men’s soccer team opened Colonial Athletic Association action with a 0-0 tie against Northeastern University on Friday at the Delaware Mini-Stadium and a 5-0 loss to Hofstra University on Sunday in Hempstead, N.Y.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens are now 1-5-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference. They will continue CAA play by hosting one of the top-ranked teams in the nation, with No. 6-ranked Old Dominion University visiting at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7. The Hens also will face the College of William & Mary at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 9.

In the Northeastern game, both teams had opportunities to win in regulation. With 31 minutes left in the second half, UD’s T.C. Young snapped a header from just a few yards out but the shot was snagged by Northeastern goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio. Nearly 15 minutes later, Northeastern had its best chance to take the lead when Ray Dinizio’s shot eluded UD goalie Taylor Thames but hit the left post and bounced directly back to Thames, who then covered up to end the threat.

The Hens had the best chance to win the game in overtime when Sobhan Tadjalli broke in alone on Saccoccio but his shot was blocked and the follow up was cleared away by Northeastern defenders.

Hofstra scored four first-half goals to take control of Sunday’s match. Thames started in goal for the Hens and had four saves before giving way to freshman keeper Chris Jones.
