Navy edges Delaware in NCAA lacrosse 12:05 p.m., May 16, 2005--The U.S. Naval Academy mens lacrosse team withstood a late University of Delaware rally to defeat the Fightin Blue Hens 9-7 on Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md., in the opening round of the NCAA Division I championship tournament. UD fell behind 8-2 but scored five goals in the second half to make it close. For the Hens, freshman midfielder Drew Turner scored a pair of goals, and Cam Howard, Dan Hechtkopf, Andy Hipple, Jordan Hall and Joe Trentzsch scored one each. Hechtkopf also had a pair of assists. Midfielder Alex Smith won 11 of 20 face-offs, and goalkeeper Chris Collins had 12 saves. "I was pleased with our effort all year," UD Head Coach Bob Shillinglaw said. "Our guys hustled their hearts out. We went down 8-2 and our guys could have decided to ride it out, but they kept playing hard and they just came up short. We didn't capitalize on some things early and that hurt us." Navy will meet the University of Virginia on Saturday at Homewood Field in Baltimore. Virginia advanced with a 23-9 victory over the University of Albany. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
