Hens, Towson to meet for CAA lacrosse title

9:19 a.m., May 5, 2005--The host University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team defeated Hofstra University 8-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament semifinals last night and will host the conference title game against two-time defending champion Towson University at 8 p.m., Saturday, May 7, at Rullo Stadium.

The winner of that game will advance to the NCAA Division I championship tournament.

In Wednesday night’s game played before 620 fans at Rullo, the Fightin’ Blue Hens fell behind 2-0 in the first quarter before battling back to forge a 3-3 tie at the half on goals by Andy Hipple, Joe Trentzsch and Dan Deckelbaum.

The Hens then scored the first four goals of the second half to pull away, with Cam Howard scoring twice and Vincent Giordano and Jarryd Krouse also scoring.

A fourth period goal by UD’s John Carrozza secured the victory.

UD goalkeeper Chris Collins had 12 saves in a strong defensive effort.

The victory avenged an earlier 13-3 loss to the Pride.

"We encouraged our guys to be patient, possess the ball longer and get us some better opportunities for quality shots tonight," UD Head Coach Bob Shillinglaw said. "We slowed them (Hofstra) down a little and that was the big difference. Our guys played their hearts out tonight and I know they'll have that same look in their eyes Saturday night in the championship game."

Towson advanced to the championship game with a 5-4 victory over Villanova University. UD defeated Towson 11-4 earlier this season, although the Tigers are ranked No. 11 in the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association NCAA Division I poll and the Hens are ranked No. 16.
