UD men’s lacrosse top seed in CAA tourney

3:49 p.m., April 25, 2005--The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team has earned the top seed in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament after a hard-fought 7-6 victory over Drexel University on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens and Towson University both finished 4-1 atop the CAA in conference play, with the Hens having won an earlier meeting between the two teams.

By virtue of that victory over Towson, the Hens earned the top seed and are assured a home semifinal game in the CAA tournament, which will open on Wednesday, May 4. UD will host fourth-seeded Hofstra at Rullo Stadium, with Towson and Villanova University matched in the other semifinal contest.

The championship game will be played Saturday, May 7, on the home field of the higher seed. The CAA tournament champion will earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Division I playoffs.

In Saturday’s victory, the Hens fell behind 4-0 before coming back for the win. Senior attack Andy Hipple and freshman midfielder Vincent Giordano scored two goals each, Dave Powers had a goal and an assist and Joe Trentzsch had three assists. Sophomore Alex Smith, the national leader in face-offs, won 13 of 16 for the Hens and goalkeeper Chris Collins had eight saves.

The Hens are now 9-4 overall as they prepare to face Yale University in a game at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, at Indian Hills High School in Oakland, N.J.
