UD men’s lacrosse faces Hofstra in CAA semifinals

11:26 a.m., May 3, 2005--The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team will open the Colonial Athletic Association playoffs on Wednesday night, May 4, taking on Hofstra University in a semifinal game at 7 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens, under Head Coach Bob Shillinglaw, enter the playoffs with a share of the regular season CAA championship and as the top seed. UD finished the season with a record of 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference, and were ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division I in the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll.

Hofstra, the conference tournament’s fourth seed, enters the game with a record of 8-7 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The Pride is ranked No. 19 in the USILA poll.

In the other semifinal game, second seed Towson University will host third seed Villanova University at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday.

The winners of the two games will meet on the home field of the higher seed. If the Hens defeat Hofstra, they will host the conference championship game on Saturday, May 7.

UD has shown a strong attack this season, and sophomore midfielder Jordan Hall leads the CAA with 42 points on 26 goals and 16 assists. Senior Dave Powers also has 26 goals, and senior Joe Trentzsch has 21, while Andy Hipple and Dan Deckelbaum have 17 each.

UD sophomore midfielder Alex Smith leads the nation in face-off percentage (.743) and ground balls per game (8.54) in the NCAA statistics released April 24.

Hofstra is led by sophomore Athan Iannucci, who has 26 goals and 12 assists. The Pride leads the series with the Hens 17-8, including a 13-3 win in Newark on April 9.
