Delaware’s McLister in U.S. Amateur field

UD’s Joe McLister is competing in the U.S. Amateur Championship.
11:25 a.m., Aug. 22, 2005--Joe McLister, a junior captain on the University of Delaware golf team, will compete in the U.S. Amateur Championship this week at Merion Golf Club and Philadelphia Country Club.

McLister, a native of Leesburg, Va., who has been UD’s top player each of the past two seasons, teed off at 7:48 a.m., Monday, Aug. 22, at the Philadelphia Country Club. He is playing in a threesome that includes Jay Reynolds, a senior at the University of New Mexico, and Robert Caton.

A total of 312 amateur golfers will compete in stroke play for 18 holes on Monday and Tuesday with the top 64 players advancing to match play at Merion beginning Wednesday. The championship match will be played Sunday, Aug. 28. The Golf Channel will broadcast the action Aug. 24-25, and NBC will broadcast the semifinals and finals on Aug. 27-28.

McLister, who earlier this summer placed second at the U.S. Eastern Amateur in Portsmouth, Va., has enjoyed two outstanding seasons for the Fightin’ Blue Hens and currently holds the school record for lowest career stroke average at 76.18. He has posted eight career tournament top 10 finishes and 14 top 20 finishes.

As a freshman in 2003-04, McLister led the team with a 75.80 stroke average and had six top 10 finishes, including a second-place finish at the John McDonald Classic hosted by Temple University during the fall season. His season-low score was a 71 at the Towson University Invitational.

This past season, McLister recorded a team-best stroke average of 76.58 and had two top 10 finishes, including the championship of the Goldey-Beacom College Invitational during the spring, when he shot a career-low 69 at Hartefeld National Golf Club.
