UD mens basketball signs three recruits 11:28 a.m., May 3, 2005--Three players have signed NCAA national letters of intent to compete for the University of Delaware mens basketball team, Fightin Blue Hens Head Coach David Henderson announced Monday. They are Calvin Cannon, a 6 foot, 2 inch point guard from Metuchen, N.J., Matt Hewson, a 7-2 center from Woodbridge, Va., and Zaire Taylor, a 6-4 guard from Staten Island, N.Y. Cannon, who was a New Jersey All-State player at St. Josephs High School, will have two years of eligibility remaining after playing the last two years at Palm Beach (Fla.) Community College. He averaged 17.7 points and 4.6 assists per game for Palm Beach last season. "We are really happy to have Calvin join our program," Henderson said. "He has experience at the college level, and we will look for him to help with our transition out of the Mike Slattery era. Calvin is a very good shooter and decision maker, and those are things we are going to need from the point guard position next year." Hewson, who attended Hylton (Va.) High School, should help the UD frontcourt immediately after averaging 17.2 points and 11.4 rebounds per game during his senior season. Hewson was named Hylton's most valuable player and competed alongside some of the top high school seniors in the country in Washington, D.C.s Capital Classic, scoring four points and pulling down two rebounds for the Capital All-Stars squad. "Matt is a unique player are we are very excited to have him in our program," Henderson said. "He has the ability to block and alter shots, which is something we have not had since Ajmal Basit. Matt also has good hands and runs the court well, and his presence inside defensively will allow us to play more aggressively on the perimeter." Taylor averaged 13 points, five assists and 2.8 steals per game while leading Charis Prep of Wilson, N.C., to a 29-7 record this season. Taylor led Charish Prep to a third-place finish at the National Prep School Invitational. "Zaire is a combination guard whose height will allow us to match up well with other guards in the Colonial Athletic Association," Henderson said. "Zaire has the ability to play right away, and Calvin will help with his development in the backcourt. Zaire has the ability to defend and knock down shots, and he has a bright future in our program." To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
