Lacrosse teams win honors, ranking

2:28 p.m., March 30, 2005--Senior goalkeeper Chris Collins, who led the Blue Hen men’s lacrosse team to an 11-5 upset win over CAA rival No. 12 Towson in their conference opener on March 26, was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week for the period ending March 28.

A three-year starter from Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Collins was outstanding, allowing only five goals while matching a career-high 19 saves as UD toppled the two-time defending CAA champions.

Collins faced 41 Towson shots and turned back five shots in the first quarter, two in the second, four in the third and eight in the final quarter, as UD held off the Tigers.

Currently ranked third in the CAA in goals allowed (7.16) and third in save percentage (.611), Collins ranks second in saves per game (11.00). He also ranks fifth all-time at UD with 475 saves.

Collins is the third Delaware player honored by the CAA this season. Sophomore midfielder Jordan Hall was named CAA Player of the Week on March 14, while freshman midfielder Vincent Giordano was named CAA Rookie of the Week on Feb. 28.

The Blue Hens, who jumped out to an early 6-0 lead against Towson, won their second straight game and improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Sophomore Cam Howard scored a season-high three goals, all in the first half, and dished out an assist while Joe Trentzsch and Andy Hipple each scored twice. Drew Turner and Dave Powers each contributed a goal and an assist for the Hens.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens women’s lacrosse team moved up five spaces to No. 15 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Top 20 poll.

Led by first-year head coach Kim Ciarrocca, the Blue Hen women are ranked in the top 20 for the fourth straight week. The No. 15 ranking is the highest for a Delaware women’s lacrosse team since the Hens achieved a No. 13 ranking on March 13, 2001.

Northwestern is ranked No. 1, followed by Virginia, North Carolina, Princeton, Duke, Dartmouth, Penn State, Georgetown, Maryland and Hofstra.

The Blue Hens women’s lacrosse team will host No. 10 Hofstra at noon, Sunday, April 3, at Rullo Stadium.

The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team received the most votes of any unranked team in the UDILA poll, with 18, and was second among other teams receiving votes in the Inside Lacrosse poll with 58. The Hens host Sacred Heart at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 3, at Rullo Stadium.
