Hens fall to Old Dominion

2:51 p.m., March 12, 2005--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team fell 78-74 in overtime to Old Dominion University in the Colonial Athletic Association championship game, played Saturday afternoon at the Patriot Center in Fairfax. Va.

For Old Dominion, it was the 14th consecutive CAA championship and came largely because of the strong play of senior guard Shareese Grant, who scored 35 points. With the win, the Monarchs earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA championship tournament.

With the loss, the 25-5 Fightin’ Blue Hens, who defeated Old Dominion twice during the regular season and captured the regular season title, must now wait to see if they get either an NCAA at-large invitation or a trip to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

Leading the Hens were senior forwards Tiffany Young, who had 23 points and nine rebounds, and Tiara Malcom, who had 19 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore guard Tyresa Smith, who had 18 points and eight rebounds.

UD had a 35-28 lead at the half, and maintained the lead until 5:40 left to play when Old Dominion tied the game at 58-58.

The teams went into overtime tied 68-68.
