Blue Hen golf team sets school records

UD’s Joe McLister
11:40 a.m., Oct. 13, 2005--Four school records were set as the University of Delaware golf team shot a three-round total of 848 and finished in a tie for eighth place at the James Madison University Golf Invitational held Monday and Tuesday at Lakeview Golf Course in Harrisonburg, Va.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens shot team scores of 281 and 284 on Monday and 283 on Tuesday to finish with a four-under-par 848. The 281 set a team single round record and the 848 set a three-round tournament record for the Hens.

Individually, UD junior Joe McLister came in fourth overall by shooting scores of 70 and 69 on Monday and 67 on Tuesday to finish at 206. His 67 matched a career best and was the second best score in school history.

McLister’s consecutive rounds of 69 and 67 for 136 tied the school record he set earlier this season at the Rutgers Invitational and his three-round score of 206 established another school record.

McLister has led the team in four straight tournaments and in six of the last seven. He has now shot 69 or better six times in his career, including five times this season.

George Mason University captured the team title with a 16-under-par total of 275, two strokes better than Liberty University at 277. James Madison and Drexel tied for third at 839 followed by Villanova (841), Belmont Abbey (845), Western Carolina (845), Delaware (848), St. Bonaventure (848), Longwood (852), Cornell (870) and Canisius (880) in the 12-team field.

Delaware’s other four players all shot season-low scores as Tyler Kupper had rounds of 70, 71 and 71 to finish 20th at 212; Jeff Griest shot 70, 70 and 74 to finish 28th at 214; Steve Boerner shot 71, 74 and 74 to finish 48th at 219; and J.J. Oakley shot 75, 76 and 71 to finish 57th at 222.

George Mason’s Mike Kirby captured the individual title, shooting scores of 66 and 70 on Monday and firing a 10 under par 61 on Tuesday to finish at 197. James Madison’s Jay Lindell finished second and Liberty’s Andrew Turner finished third.
