Delaware golf team announces recruits

9:45 a.m., June 6, 2005--Three freshman recruits and a transfer have been added to the University of Delaware golf team, according to Fightin’ Blue Hens Head Coach Mike Keogh.

Keogh said the recruiting class includes freshmen Brian Curtin from Lanoka Harbor, N.J., Tommy Ellison from Bethany Beach and Jeffrey Griest from Glen Mills, Pa. Also joining the team is Stephen Boerner from Bethlehem, Pa., who is transferring to UD from Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C.

“We are excited to have these four join our golf program here at Delaware,” Keogh, who will enter his fifth season as head coach in the fall, said. “We expect each of them to make a strong contribution to the team this coming season and in the future.”

Curtin was a three-year standout for the golf team at Lacey Township High School, where he served as class president. He was selected the team’s most valuable player in both 2004 and 2005, and finished third in the Shore Conference tournament last month after finishing fifth in 2004 and eighth in 2003. He was a two-time All-Shore and all-county selection, competed in the state sectional tournament and finished sixth in the U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier in 2004. He won five tournament titles during his high school career.

Griest capped an outstanding scholastic career at Westtown (Pa.) Friends School by winning his second career Friends League individual championship and led Westtown to its third straight title. He also won the tournament in 2003 and tied for second place in 2004. A two-year team captain, he finished third at the Pennsylvania Golf Association junior championship in 2004 after finishing fourth in the event in 2003. He won the 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier at Wild Quail Golf Club in Wyoming, Del., in 2004 and went on to compete at the U.S. Junior National Championships at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Ellison was a four-year standout at Worcester Preparatory School in Berlin, Md., earning team most valuable player honors all four seasons as a varsity performer. He captured the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference tournament individual title four consecutive seasons and tied Griest and two other players for the top score at the 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur at Wild Quail.

Boerner attended Campbell University the last two years but did not compete for the golf team. He enjoyed an outstanding high school career at Bethlehem (Pa.) Catholic High School, where he captured the East Penn Conference tournament individual title as a junior in 2001 and finished 12th at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) state championships as a senior in 2002. He also finished second at the Eastern Pennsylvania Amateur in 2001 and was second at the PIAA district qualifying tournament in 2002. He will have sophomore eligibility at UD.
