UD field hockey’s Geib wins NCAA scholarship

Leah Geib
9:29 a.m., June 10, 2005--University of Delaware field hockey All-American Leah Geib has been awarded a $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Geib, who helped lead the Fightin’ Blue Hens to the 2004 Colonial Athletic Association championship and a berth in the NCAA Division I tournament, received a bachelor’s degree in communication from UD in May and achieved an outstanding grade point average of 3.92. She plans to continue her graduate studies at UD.

Geib is the eighth UD scholar-athlete to earn the prestigious scholarship, following basketball player Brian Downie in 1979, track and field athlete John Wehner in 1983, tennis players Carol Renfrew in 1984 and Chuck Herak in 1985, football player Brian Farrell in 1985, and track and field athletes Alison Farrance in 1986 and Travis Adams in 1995.

A two-time College Sports Information Directors of America District 2 All-Academic selection, Geib was a four-year starter for the nationally ranked UD field hockey team under Head Coach Carol Miller. She was a co-captain on the 2004 team.

Geib earned all-conference honors all four years of her career, was a three-time all-region selection and earned second team National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-American honors in 2004. She was named the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for field hockey twice and also was a member of the NFHCA National Academic team and CAA Academic Honor Roll.

Geib also was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and the UD Student-Athlete Advisory Council, served as tutor and peer mentor at UD, served on the UD Athletics Governing Board and the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, and was active with Homeward Bound Inc., Champions for Charity, Ronald McDonald House and other charitable organizations.
