Delaware football drops third straight game

11:27 a.m., Oct. 17, 2005--The University of Delaware football team fell 20-10 to the University of Richmond in a game played Saturday at University of Richmond Stadium. It was the third straight loss for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, who fell to 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

UD will return to action with a game against James Madison University, the defending NCAA Division I-AA national champion, at noon, Saturday, Oct. 22, on Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium.

James Madison is 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 following a 10-7 loss to the University of Massachusetts on Saturday.

“We had a great opportunity to right our season today,” UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler said of the loss to Richmond, “but we just couldn’t take advantage of this opportunity, and that is what is so disappointing. We are getting such a tremendous effort in practice and on the field but we are so inconsistent and are giving up so many big plays, it’s tremendously frustrating.”

In what has been a recurring problem this season, the Hens were unable to mount much offense until late in the game. They fell behind 17-3 at the half and 20-3 after three quarters.

Senior quarterback Sonny Riccio completed 21 of 38 passes for 234 yards and ran 17 times for 47 yards and one touchdown.

Sophomore running back Omar Cuff carried 12 times for 59 yards and caught four passes for 50 yards and wide receiver Kervin Michaud had six catches for 45 yards.

The Hens have not opened a conference season 0-3 since 1987, when they competed in the Yankee Conference, and have not lost three consecutive games in a season since 1989.
