Blue Hen football team falls 10-6 to Hofstra

10:54 a.m., Oct. 10, 2005--Still looking for its first win in Atlantic 10 Conference play, the University of Delaware fell 10-6 to Hofstra University during its Homecoming game Saturday on a soggy Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens lost their second straight game and fell to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the Atlantic 10. They will face another conference opponent, the University of Richmond, at 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 15, at Delaware Stadium.

Richmond is 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Spiders, led by quarterback Stacy Tutt, are coming off a 38-20 victory over Villanova University.

In Saturday’s loss, Hofstra backup quarterback Dennis Davis scored the game’s only touchdown late in the third quarter to secure the victory. UD could manage just a pair of field goals by freshman kicker Zach Hobby.

The Hens’ leading ball carrier, sophomore Omar Cuff, was limited to 35 yards on 18 carries. He did catch eight passes for 105 yards.

Senior quarterback Sonny Riccio completed just 20 passes in 50 attempts for 248 yards.

UD had a chance to win, reaching the Hofstra four-yard line very late in the fourth quarter. However, the Hens were unable to score, with Riccio throwing three consecutive incomplete passes.

“We are very disappointed,” UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler said. “Two weeks in a row now we needed to make a big play near the end of the game and didn’t. In the past, it seems as if we always made those big plays at the end. It was a very tough loss but our kids kept battling. Our locker room is about as quiet as I’ve ever heard it.”

“Any time you get out of here (Delaware Stadium) with a win, there’s nothing like it,” Hofstra Head Coach Joe Gardi said. “It hasn’t been too often for us. This was a defensive win and probably the best we’ve played on defense all season. It’s the most fun we’ve ever had when scoring 10 points.”

Linebacker John Mulhern led the UD defense with 12 tackles, including two sacks, while Erik Johnson had five tackles and intercepted a pass.
