Towson tops Blue Hens in Atlantic 10 football

2:43 p.m., Oct. 3, 2005--Towson University capped a late-game drive with a touchdown to defeat the No. 5-ranked University of Delaware 35-31 on Saturday at Johnny Unitas Stadium. The win was Towson’s first in the Atlantic 10 since joining the conference.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens fell to 3-1 and will return to Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium to face another Atlantic 10 opponent, Hofstra University, in the annual homecoming game at noon, Saturday, Oct. 8. Hofstra is 2-2 with victories over Albany and Stony Brook and losses to Furman and James Madison.

In the loss to Towson, UD fell behind 14-3 at the half before the offense kicked into gear to score 28 second-half points. The Hens had 396 yards of total offense but also gave up 431 yards.

UD sophomore running back Omar Cuff carried the ball 26 times for 127 yards. He also caught eight passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. Joe Bleymaier caught five passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns.

Senior quarterback Sonny Riccio completed 22 of 39 passes for 241 yards and one touchdown. He also ran 10 times for 28 yards and scored on a three-yard carry with just over a minute left in the game to put the Hens up 31-28.

However, Towson quarterback Sean Schaeffer led the Tigers to the game-winning touchdown with the big play being a 42-yard pass to wide receiver Andrae Brown.
