Hens defeat Holy Cross

10:08 a.m., Sept. 26, 2005--Overcoming a sluggish start, the University of Delaware football team broke open a close game with a third quarter surge and defeated the College of the Holy Cross 35-23 on Saturday night on Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium.

UD sophomore running back Omar Cuff piled up more than 200 yards of total offense, running for a career-high 177 yards and catching three passes for 27 yards. He scored three touchdowns.

Senior quarterback Sonny Riccio completed 16 of 22 passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns, to Cuff and senior wide receivers Brian Ingram and Joe Bleymaier. Riccio also ran for 60 yards on five carries.

Ingram led the UD wide receivers with five catches for 47 yards.

With the victory, the Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 3-0 while Holy Cross fell to 2-2. After three home games, the Hens will take to the road to open Atlantic 10 Conference play against Towson University at Johnny Unitas Stadium at 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 1.

The Tigers are 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference, falling 62-21 to the University of New Hampshire and 56-41 to Northeastern University.

Against Holy Cross, the Hens trailed 17-14 in the third quarter before reeling off three straight touchdowns to put the game out of reach.

“We kept battling all night, and that was the key,” UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler said. “Early on, Holy Cross was playing at three-man front so we knew we had to run the ball and take advantage. Finally we got things going. When the other team gives you something, you have to take it. Our team is dynamic, and our speed is starting to come around, and we are making big plays.”
