Men’s/women’s tennis squads play in Florida

2:50 p.m., March 30, 2005--The Fightin’ Blue Hens men’s and women’s tennis teams continued their successful spring break trek to Florida with wins over host Weber International on Tuesday, March 29.

The Blue Hen women downed Webber 2-9 for the second straight year. The victory gave former Blue Hen standout Laura Travis her 150th career win as UD head women’s tennis coach and an overall record of 150-109.

The Blue Hen women won all nine matches to post their sixth shutout of the season, receiving singles victories from Susan Pollack, Liz Perlow, Sari Shuster, Alexa Dragonette and Katie Miller. In the doubles competition, Pollack and Dragonnette won at the No. 1 spot, and Miller and Brittany Barsky took the No. 2 spot.

The men increased their win streak to three matches and improved to 2-0 during their trip to the Sunshine State, and are 7.2 overall.

Delaware got singles victories from Adam Lebman, Josh Ditman, Jesse Carl and Jason Hanschman. In doubles action, the men’s tennis team got wins from Sammy Carl and Phillip Wayne and from Ditman and Johathan Schwartz. Carl and Wayne improved to 9-1 on the season.

Action earlier this week saw the Blue Hens opening their annual spring break Florida tour on March 28, with a split against host Bethune-Cookman.

The Delaware men (6-2), playing in their first game after a week of rainouts, took their second straight match with a 5-2 win as the Blue Hens won two doubles matches to earn the doubles point while taking four of the six singles competitions.

The Blue Hen women’s tennis squad (10-2) saw its three-match wining streaking stopped as Bethune-Cookman won the deciding point by taking two of three doubles matches. The match was the 500th in UD history, with the Hens owning an all-time mark of 305-195 since 1973.
