Field hockey classic features former Hens

9:25 a.m., Sept. 2, 2005--The University of Delaware’s Blue Hen Classic field hockey tournament to be played this weekend at Rullo Stadium will feature three former Fightin’ Blue Hen players among the four head coaches participating.

In addition to UD, teams participating in the tournament are from Ohio State University, Duke University and the University of Richmond. UD Head Coach Carol Miller is a 1982 graduate of UD, Ohio State’s Ann Wilkinson is a 1986 graduate and Richmond’s Ange Bradley is a 1988 graduate. All three played field hockey for the Hens.

Tournament games will be played at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. UD will meet Duke in the opening game on Saturday, followed by Ohio State against Richmond. Ohio State and Duke will meet in the opening game on Sunday, followed by Richmond against UD.

UD enters the tournament 3-0 after a successful West Coast swing during which the Hens defeated the University of the Pacific, the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University. The Hens are the defending champions of the Colonial Athletic Conference, which is generally regarded as one of the top three field hockey conferences in NCAA Division I.

Wilkinson’s Ohio State team, which plays in the highly competitive Big 10 Conference, is 0-1 following an opening game loss to the University of Maryland. The Buckeyes fell 2-1.

Bradley’s Richmond team, the defending Atlantic 10 Conference champion, is 1-1 with a 3-1 loss to American University and a 3-0 victory over Radford University.

Duke, which competes in the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference, was runner-up in the 2004 NCAA championship tournament. The Blue Devils are 2-0 after defeating the University of Louisville 7-0 and Michigan State University 3-0.
