UD fall sports season to open this weekend

2:48 p.m., Aug. 24, 2005--The University of Delaware fall sports season will get under way this weekend with volleyball, field hockey and women’s soccer action.

UD’s volleyball team, which reached the Colonial Athletic Association championship game last year, will begin the season by hosting the Delaware Invitational Tournament. The tournament will open with a match between the University of San Francisco and the University of New Hampshire at 4:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 26, on Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building off Main Street.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will face the University of Pittsburgh at 7 p.m., Friday, New Hampshire at 1 p.m., Saturday, and San Francisco at 7 p.m., Saturday.

Pitt will take on San Francisco at 11 a.m., Saturday, and New Hampshire at 4:30 p.m., Saturday.

UD’s field hockey team, which won the 2004 CAA championship and earned a berth in the NCAA Division I tournament, will open the season on the West Coast. The Hens will face the University of the Pacific on Saturday, the University of California at Berkeley on Sunday and Stanford University on Tuesday.

The Hens will return home the following weekend to host the Blue Hen Classic, with games Saturday and Sunday at Rullo Stadium. UD will face teams from Duke University and the University of Richmond.

The UD women’s soccer team will open on the road, playing at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia at 7 p.m., Friday, and at Seton Hall University at 1 p.m., Sunday.

Also this weekend, the UD men’s soccer team will play a scrimmage against the University of Maryland Baltimore County at 7 p.m., Friday, at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.
